A Course In Miracles

Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the origin of God?

Written by Britney Shawley, Spiritual Therapist

Today’s question is a big one—one that I know many of you have asked at some point on your A Course in Miracles journey.

This question comes from a fellow student, JohnHe is asking about the origin of God.

QUESTION:

“Does A Course in Miracles help resolve the question of the origin of God?”

John used to phrase this question when he was a kid as:

 “Who are God’s grandparents?”

I love this question.

It reminds us of the innocence and curiosity we hold in our hearts.

Even as children, we long to understand where we come from, who God really is, and how we fit into this vast and beautiful mystery.

I can’t wait to explore this with you.

Where Did God Come From? Can ACIM Help Me With This?

MY ANSWER:

The short answer is: Yes.

But A Course in Miracles doesn’t explain this through theology or intellectual arguments.

It leads us to understanding through direct experience.

The Course says:

“A universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary.”

This means that while theological debates can be helpful, the true goal of A Course in Miracles is an experience of truth—an experience that every one of us is destined to have.

Through this experience, we come to know God—not as an abstract concept, but as a living presence within us.

The Course teaches that understanding God isn’t about seeking answers outside of ourselves—in books, teachers, or external sources.

Instead, it invites us to quiet our minds and listen within, allowing space for divine truth to be revealed directly to us.

This Is Really A Conversation About Time?

A Course in Miracles teaches:

  • We are not separate from God. We are His creation—eternal, whole, and loved.
  • God is not a being in time. He has no “before” or “after” like we do.
  • God is the source of all reality. Nothing comes before Him, and nothing exists outside of Him.
  • To know God, we must remove the blocks to love. This happens through mind training, forgiveness, and miracles.

Because God has never taken on form and exists outside of time, He has no past—no grandparents, no beginning, and no end.

God, as the source of love, created us as love.

But while we chose to take on a human identity, God remains unchanged—forever the source of love.

Our spiritual journey is about remembering this truth, not as an intellectual idea, but as an experience we can fully trust.

If God Has Nothing To Do With Time, Than I Can Only Have A Relationship With Him?

At first, God might feel like just an idea—something we think about, question, or try to define.

But as we deepen our practice, God becomes a relationship.

I remember when I first encountered the word “God” in A Course in Miracles.

I resisted it.

I wasn’t religious, and I didn’t agree with much of what I had been taught about God.

The concept felt foreign and uncomfortable.

So, I crossed out the word “God” in my Course book and replaced it with love or universe.

It was easier for me to accept that “God is love” or “God is the universe” than to engage with the term itself.

But something happened over time.

I continued applying the Course’s teachings.

I did the lessons.

I read the book.

And slowly, my mind and heart opened.

Instead of filling my mind with intellectual ideas about God, I emptied it—and in that stillness, I experienced God.

The voice for love within me began to speak—reminding me of my true home, my true self, and what this life is really about.

That’s when everything changed.

By training my mind in the way A Course in Miracles teaches, I didn’t just change my thoughts about God—I changed my experience of God.

Building A Relationship With God Is A Learned Skill?

I share this because I want you to know:

  • It’s okay if you don’t fully understand God yet.
  • It’s okay if you struggle with religious language.
  • It’s okay to meet yourself where you are.

What matters is openness—being willing to experience the truth rather than trying to define it intellectually.

A Course in Miracles tells us that God is always calling us into relationship with Him.

Whether we realize it or not, He is not distant or separate from us.

He is always speaking, always guiding, always inviting us back into remembrance.

Jesus speaks to us in the Course, saying:

“If you want to be like me, I will help you, knowing that we are alike. If you want to be different, I will wait until you change your mind. I can teach you, but only you can choose to listen to my teaching.”

This reminds us that God’s kingdom is freedom.

It’s up to us to train our minds to listen to His voice—the voice of love inside us.

And as we do, Christ will teach us what we are.

And when we know what we are, we will know who God is.

When we stop trying to fit God into human terms (time), when we let go of our fears, misunderstandings, and projections, we make space for something much deeper.

And then… we no longer need to ask where God came from.

Because we know—He simply is.

And we are in Him, always.

There are no words that can truly capture this.

It’s something we come to know in our hearts.

And that knowing transforms us.
