This week, a thoughtful student named Charles asked a deep and important question about A Course in Miracles and the Bible.
Let’s take a deep breath together.
Today’s question brings us into sacred territory— where ancient scripture and present-day practice meet.

Here is what he asked:
QUESTION:
“Does A Course in Miracles follow the Bible in its works, or is it an alternative view—or maybe something similar?”
Charles, what a meaningful question.
It opens the door to a deeper understanding of both the Bible and A Course in Miracles.
I can’t wait to explore this with you.
Where Do the Bible and the Course Align?
MY ANSWER:
Let’s begin with where the Bible and the Course are aligned.
There are many beautiful truths shared by both:
- God is love.
- Jesus is the Son of God, sent to awaken us and free us from fear.
- Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection both matter—though their meanings are interpreted differently.
- Miracles are real.
They’re expressions of love.
Both the Bible and the Course teach us:
- Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
- Love your neighbour
- Forgive—even your enemies.
- Walk in compassion.
- The Holy Spirit is within us—our Guide, Comforter, and Teacher.
- Faith is essential to receiving miracles.
- “You will do these and greater things,” as Jesus said.
- We are never alone.
And the Kingdom of Heaven?
In both texts, we find this:
It’s not far away in the sky—it’s within.
Who Really Wrote A Course in Miracles?
A Course in Miracles contains direct quotes from the Bible—reinterpreted and clarified by Jesus Himself.
The Course tells us: Jesus is its author.
Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford were simply the scribes.
One of my favourite quotes appears in both the Bible and the Course:
“By their fruits you shall know them.”
This means: we’ll recognise someone by the joy, love, care, and light that flows from them.
Another shared phrase:
“Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.”
But the Course explains this differently.
It doesn’t mean God is vengeful.
It means we give our thoughts of vengeance to Him, so He can heal us.
Where Do the Course and the Bible Differ?
Now, there are also places where the Bible and the Course part ways.
For example:
Yes, Jesus is the Son of God.
But in the Course, we are taught that we are too.
We are all children of God—
Learning, like Jesus did, to return to the awareness that we are one with God, and with each other.
The Course teaches that:
- Sin is not real.
It’s a mistake to be corrected—not punished. - We are innocent, not condemned.
- God is never wrathful or angry.
- Heaven is a state of mind, not a place we go after death.
- Hell? It’s the painful experience of a mind trapped in fear.
When we shift from fear to love, we begin to see Heaven on Earth.
Just as Jesus said:
“The Kingdom of Heaven is spread upon the earth, but men do not see it.”
The Course is here to train our minds to see what’s already here.
Do I Need to Be Christian to Practice This?
The Course does not require you to believe in anything.
It doesn’t even require you to be Christian.
It invites you to:
- Be willing
- Practice forgiveness
- Offer love
- Sit and listen
- Allow healing to happen
It’s a lived experience of Christ.
A lived experience of healing through relationship.
A lived experience of transformation by the Holy Spirit.
It’s not about dogma.
It’s about experience.
How Can the Course Help Me Understand the Bible More Clearly?
So when people ask,
“Is God love, or is He wrathful?”
“Am I a sinner, or an innocent child of God?”
The Course helps sort through those contradictions.
It helps us discern truth from illusion—
And choose only that which is real, according to God’s definition of reality.
It helps us fulfill what the Bible pointed toward:
Miracles, love, peace, healing, and union with God.
And it doesn’t exclude anyone.
No matter your background, race, or belief system—
If you have a mind and a heart, you are welcome.
What Is A Course in Miracles Really Designed to Do?
The Course is a year-long journey of:
- Purifying your mind
- Healing your heart
- Shifting your perception
- Reclaiming your divine inheritance
And it was given to us by Jesus—
Not years after His death, but directly, word for word, through a trained psychologist who heard His voice and wrote it down.
Just like the scribes of the Bible, Helen wrote what she heard.
So there is nothing to fear.
Only an invitation to go deeper into the love that never left us.
What’s the Loving Takeaway from All of This?
Jesus is still with us.
He has never left.
And A Course in Miracles is one of the ways He continues to guide us.
So what do we do in the meantime?
We practice love.
- More love for ourselves.
- More love for others.
- More willingness to let our minds align with God.
Because God is love.
And so are we.
There’s so much beauty in the Bible.
There’s so much beauty in the Course.
And when we look through a loving lens, we can see:
It’s all part of a greater plan for awakening—
A plan for all of us to take part in.
