Today’s episode is going to be a little different.
I’m sharing a special recorded conversation from our weekly Textbook study group.
In this recording, a student named Jody asked a heartfelt question that resonated deeply with many of us.
When I answered, there was a profound shift in the group, and I felt strongly that you would benefit from hearing this exchange too.
My hope is that this conversation brings you comfort, clarity, and renewed hope.
Here was Jody’s question:
QUESTION:
“I’m begging and pleading God to help me, but He’s not answering me. What do I do?”
I can’t wait for you to hear the answer.
Remember, you’re listening/reading to the recording from our class.
May this answer bring you peace.

I Begged God for Help, but Felt Unheard?
MY ANSWER:
Jody, I hear you saying you often go through periods of depressive episodes.
So many here can relate; you’re definitely not alone in this.
I also hear that when these depressive thoughts arise, you immediately turn to prayer, saying things like, “Please God, take this away from me.”
First, I want to acknowledge your willingness to ask God for help.
That’s beautiful and important.
But let me gently offer a slight adjustment to how you’re approaching your prayers.
I’ve learned through my own experience that what truly helps is praying from a place of gratitude instead of pleading.
I completely understand that when we’re hurting, our natural response is to beg, “Please, please, please, take this away.”
But Jesus guides us to pivot and remember that, in truth, God has already healed us.
A powerful prayer would be something like:
“Thank you, God, that you’ve already healed my mind—even if I’m not fully aware of it yet.”
Praying this way shifts our focus to truth.
You’re acknowledging God’s healing has already happened, even though you might not fully feel it right now.
And if you still feel there’s a disconnect—if healing doesn’t feel real yet—Jesus says this is where we’ve unknowingly chosen suffering.
In that case, you can add:
“Thank you, God, for revealing to me where I’m still choosing suffering.”
Because remember, suffering isn’t something God is doing to us.
It’s always the result of thoughts or beliefs we’re still holding onto.
Does that resonate, Jody?
Jody:
Yes, definitely.
My challenge is just remembering to pray like that.
I know that we cause our own suffering; it’s just finding the right words.
I’m not as good with words as you are.
I often think God probably doesn’t care about the words—as long as it’s from the heart, right?
But I understand this is what A Course in Miracles teaches, so I’ll write it down and practice it.
Is “Allowing” Suffering Different from “Causing” It?
Vicki (Study Group Friend):
I’ve found it helpful to say “I allowed it” rather than “I caused it.”
It’s a subtle shift, but it helps.
“Cause” sounds proactive and can bring up guilt, while “allow” feels more passive and compassionate.
Britney:
That’s an important distinction, Vicki—thank you for sharing that.
Let’s highlight this for a moment:
Often, our beliefs, thoughts, and conclusions didn’t originally come from us.
They were learned from family, culture, or society, and we unconsciously allowed these ideas into our minds.
So yes, we allowed them, but because we’ve allowed them, we also have the power to correct them.
Saying “allowed” is gentler and gives less room for guilt and self-blame to creep in.

Does It Really Matter If I Use the “Right Words”?
One final thought for you, Jody, before we move forward.
Regarding your concern about using the “right” words when praying:
Remember, it genuinely isn’t about perfect wording.
It’s all about the intention, the posture of your heart.
Instead of praying from desperation—like you’re drowning and need rescue—try starting your prayer with gratitude.
Something as simple as:
“Thank you, God, for realigning my mind with truth. Thank you for helping me see clearly right now.”
Just start with “thank you,” and let the rest flow naturally.
You don’t need to get the words exactly right.
This is precisely what the Workbook practice teaches—letting related thoughts come spontaneously.
With consistent practice, this will become easier and feel more natural.
Does that feel clearer, Jody?
Jody:
Yes, definitely.
It reminds me of a book I have called Jesus Calling, which says exactly that—thank God for everything, even the tough stuff.
It really is just a new perspective I have to get used to.
Brittany:
Exactly.
It’s reprogramming how we think and position ourselves spiritually.
If we posture ourselves incorrectly, we think problems and answers are outside us.
When we shift to gratitude, we acknowledge that the answer is already given, God leads, and we do need His help.
And that, my friends, is how to pray in a way that God hears and answers clearly.
