Should I Pray to God or the Holy Spirit? A Course in Miracles

Written by Britney Shawley, Spiritual Therapist

Today’s question comes from a dear sister and friend along this journey, who’s part of my Workbook support group, and her name is Jodi.

Here is what she asked:

QUESTION:

“Should I pray to God or the Holy Spirit—and who helps me in the dream?”

Jodi said she has been noticing my language this week, and that I was talking a lot about praying to God instead of praying to the Holy Spirit,

…and it left her feeling a little confused.

I’m so grateful for this question, because if she’s experiencing this, I know many of you are too.

Should I Pray To God Or The Holy Spirit?

MY ANSWER:

This is an extremely important and beautiful question for two major reasons:

First, because so many students wonder who they should pray to:

Is it God?
Is it the Holy Spirit?
Is it Jesus?
Is it anyone or anything at all?

And who actually responds to us here in the dream world—if anyone? Do they respond at all?

Second, because this question opens the door to remembering something profoundly comforting:

  • We are not navigating the dream alone.
  • We have divine help—real, present, loving, and completely available to us now.

So let’s explore this contemplation about who we are to pray to, and who is helping us in the dream.

What If the Holy Spirit Has Been Guiding Me All Along?

As I mentioned, Jodi is in my Workbook class, and so she hears me talk about asking for guidance all the time.

That really is the key to living A Course in Miracles in our daily lives.

The Course teaches—and I teach—that the Holy Spirit is the Voice for peace in our mind.

He is:

  • The One who chooses kindness instead of judgment.
  • The One who chooses love instead of fear.

The Holy Spirit is the Answer God placed in us the instant we believed we could be separate from Him.

The Holy Spirit is permanent, eternal, and He:

  • Heals
  • Comforts
  • Guides
  • Corrects
  • And reminds us of the truth

This is affirmed both in the Bible and in A Course in Miracles, and also in the lived experience of countless people who experiment with the simple practice of asking and receiving.

It would be absurd to think that God created a Guide for us that we could not communicate with. So of course we can.

The communication is reciprocal.

There is:

  • Asking
  • Listening
  • Receiving
  • Following

But it does require a deeper listening.

It requires:

  • A willingness to be still
  • A readiness to ask
  • Patience
  • And a willingness to open ourselves beyond the ego’s constant noise and doubt

How Can God Help Me If He “Doesn’t Know” the World?

Why, in A Course in Miracles, does it say God doesn’t know the world.

If He’s the One who gave us the Holy Spirit as the Answer, meant to comfort us here? Isn’t that a contradiction?

No. It’s actually not.

This statement—“God does not know this world”—confuses many students. But it becomes simple when we break it down.

The Course explains that God does not know this world because He did not create it.

Think of a loving parent who doesn’t “know” the content of a child’s dream:

  • A parent doesn’t know every detail of what the child is dreaming.
  • But they do know that the child is sleeping.

In the same way:

  • God does not know the contents of our dream.
  • But He knows that we sleep.

Just like we know when our child is asleep, even if we can’t enter their dream, God knows we are “asleep” in this dream of separation.

And while God can’t enter our dreams or our illusions—just like we can’t literally enter our kids’ dreams—He absolutely knows that we sleep.

And like a loving Father, He keeps us safe while we dream.

He keeps us comforted while we dream. He remains in perfect knowledge and love of what we are, and is right there the instant we choose to wake up and remember Him.

My friends, this is the key:

He knows you. He hasn’t forgotten you just because you’re sleeping.

He is the One keeping you warm.
He is the One loving you.

He is the One reminding you that you are safe and that you are His. God knows His Child.

He knows that we are sleeping and dreaming.

And this is why He has given us the Holy Spirit—so we would never be alone in dreams, and would always have a way out to remember Him and wake up from the dream.

So the Holy Spirit can and must work within illusions, because His job is to lead us out of them.

Whenever you ask for help—for a sign, a nudge, clarity, forgiveness, healing, a parking spot, or an opportunity to be of service to another—it is the Holy Spirit who answers, because He meets you where you believe you are.

And He holds God’s plan within His holy mind, so He can relate to us in every moment that we ask.

Am I Wrong If I Pray Directly to God?

So this brings us closer to Jodi’s question:

“If God doesn’t know the dream, and He’s given us the Holy Spirit as the Answer, is it wrong to say ‘God’ when we pray?”

Honestly, my friends—absolutely not.

When you call on God, the Holy Spirit is contained within that prayer, and the Holy Spirit will answer on His behalf.

Why? Because your heart isn’t calling for illusions.

Your heart is calling for:

  • Truth
  • Peace
  • Remembrance

And God hears that.

It’s like tuning yourself to the right radio frequency.

We cannot communicate clearly with God through our illusions, misperceptions, and false beliefs about Him and ourselves. But we can communicate with Him as we begin to remember who we are in Him.

He is one with us. He is not apart from us. And we can communicate with Him.

Every sincere request—no matter how small—becomes a doorway to healing when placed in God’s hands.

The Course even gives us a lesson that says:

“I call upon God’s Name and on my own.”

This is profound, because it means:

  • We have the authority to call upon God’s Name.
  • He answers because we share His Name.

Calling upon Him is also calling upon the memory of our own true Self in Him.

Even on Earth, children often take on the name of their father. Spiritually, we have God’s Name—and it is holy.

We are told to consult Him, to call upon His Name:

“God, God, God, God…”

And we are told that He will answer.

Are There Different Kinds of Prayer—and When Do They Shift?

There are, you could say, two main “types” of prayer in this context.

1. Prayer to the Holy Spirit

This is when we’re praying for:

  • The forgiveness of our mind
  • Direction
  • Guidance
  • Comfort in our daily lives

That is the Holy Spirit’s role all the way.

He:

  • Heals our mind
  • Corrects our perception
  • Guides us step by step

2. Prayer for Direct Contact with God

Then, as the Holy Spirit heals our mind and reminds us that we are God’s beloved Son, that there is nothing to fear and that God is only Love, something shifts within us.

We begin to deeply want God-contact.

That’s where the lesson “I call upon God’s Name and on my own” becomes very alive.

We repeat God’s Name like:

  • A mantra
  • A meditation
  • A ringing phone calling our Father

And we wait patiently as we invite Him in—so that He may greet us with His loving Presence.

This is when doubt and fear begin to fall away, because we’ve gone straight to the Source—our Father, Creator God.

But remember:

It is the Holy Spirit who prepares our mind for Him.

Do These Different Names All Point to the Same Love?

Let’s go a bit deeper into the names:

  • God
  • Jesus
  • The Holy Spirit
  • Your name—Jodi
  • My name—Britney
  • Your name, whoever is listening today

These are different names, but the same Love is behind them.

So let me say this clearly:

When I say “God,” I am invoking His Will, His Voice, His Presence, His Son, and the remembrance of my Source.

So whether I say:

  • God
  • Holy Spirit
  • Jesus

…I am calling upon the same unified Love.

This is why our own name is included in that lesson:

“I call upon God’s Name and on my own.”

We take on our Father’s Name.

Even though “Britney” is the name given to this body, the Self and Soul behind it is the Love that unites us all.

When I am calling upon my true Name, I am not calling upon the personality of “Britney.” I am calling upon my shared Identity with God. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are words, but they are symbols that point beyond themselves to Reality.

That Reality is what answers us.

The divine Truth behind the form is what responds to our prayers.

For much of the first half of A Course in Miracles, the emphasis is on the Holy Spirit:

  • His function is to heal our mind
  • To correct perception
  • To undo fear
  • To guide us gently back to God
  • To restore our memory of what we are

He is the bridge.

As the mind becomes clearer and more willing, something beautiful happens:

We become ready for direct contact with God—not just with His Voice, but with His Presence.

And we can truly call to Him—and He will respond.

What If God Really Does Feel My Deepest Longing?

There’s a helpful quote from Martin Luther King Jr. that rolls around in my mind often. It goes like this:

“In God, there is feeling and will, responsive to the deepest yearning of the human heart. This God both evokes and answers prayers.”

This captures the truth so beautifully.
God answers prayers in this world because He knows you.

He knows:

  • Your heart
  • Your needs

And He loves you.

He does not need to know the details of the dream in order to love His Son within it.

God helps you here. The Holy Spirit helps you here. Jesus helps you here.

And your brothers and sister souls help you here.

So Who Am I Really Praying To?

So this brings us to the heart of today’s question:

“Who should you pray to?”

Here is the simplest answer:

Pray to whoever opens your heart.

Call upon:

  • The Holy Spirit, if that works for you.
  • Jesus.
  • God.
  • Love.
  • The angels.
  • The universe.
  • The Divine Mind.

Call out for help, even if you don’t know what it means, or what to call it.

Just pray. Just ask.

Prayer is the medium of miracles, and all of these names are one in truth. When you call on one, you literally call on all.

And don’t forget to include yourself in the circle of holiness.

You are the prodigal child:

  • Always welcome
  • Always celebrated
  • Always loved

Let your doubt about the body never make you forget where you came from or the Light that lives within you now.

Will You Join Me in a Simple Prayer Right Now?

Here is a closing prayer for all of us, to ground this into our hearts and minds.

If you’re inspired, you can close your eyes with me now.

Just settle into your breath, and let us call upon the Love that created us, together:

God, Jesus, Holy Spirit,
We open our minds and hearts to You now.
Guide us, comfort us, heal our perception.
Let us hear Your Voice above all doubt and fear.
Remind us of our innocence, our purpose, and our unity with You.
We place our lives, our choices, and our path in Your hands.
We trust You to lead us home.
And so it is. Amen.

Thank you, beautiful soul, for joining me today in this moment and in this prayer.

Together, we practice the art of asking and receiving. The name that we call to does not matter as much as the heart that yearns for an answer.

You are entitled to miracles, my friends.

God loves you. God wants you to heal.

And God wants you to remember who you are. We walk this road together.

You are not alone. And you are deeply loved.

Want More Of This Goodness?

Every Tuesday, I lead a live A Course in Miracles Textbook Study Group.

It is a space for open-hearted Course students, especially:

  • Those who are deconstructing old religious beliefs but still love Jesus and want to heal without guilt and shame.
  • Those who’ve been on the spiritual path for a while, tried all the workshops and modalities, but are now ready for lasting peace, real joy, and genuine purpose in God’s plan.

These gatherings are what I like to call live-action spiritual therapy—at least for the first 30 minutes of class, where we work directly with the Text.

After that, we shift our perception, release hidden unforgiveness, and step into our function as miracle workers.

By joining our Textbook group, you will also be first in line for my 18-month Workbook journey, which begins in mid-2026. You’ll be at the top of my list to sign up.

But the healing begins now—today.

If you’d like to stay connected with me and join my community—who is just like you—we meet every Tuesday for the A Course in Miracles Text group. I’ll make sure the link is below so that you can join us.
