This week, we received a deep and thoughtful question from Stefan, a student of A Course in Miracles.

This question I’ve heard many times before, especially from new students. 

It’s about the nature of what we truly are.

And sometimes, the way this teaching is explained by others can leave people feeling confused… even depressed, instead of uplifted or inspired. And that’s a red flag.

Because if it doesn’t bring peace and joy, it’s not the Voice for God.

So today, we’re diving deep into A Course in Miracles to bring clarity, healing, and understanding around this foundational question:

What are we—really?

This is not just a spiritual concept.

It’s one of the biggest questions of all time.

If you’ve ever felt lost or uncertain when reading that part of the Course…

If you’ve wondered whether you’re just an illusion, a dream, or nothing at all…
You are not alone.

Here is what he asked:

QUESTION:

“I’m starting to discover A Course in Miracles. I’m a little confused about who we really are. From what I understand, I don’t actually exist—because I’m just part of a dream the ego created.

So everything and everyone in it must be an illusion, right? Even though I’m conscious… it feels like I don’t really exist.

I hope I’ve misunderstood this, because otherwise it’s a really depressing thought.”

Stefan, I’m so glad you asked this.

Let’s take this apart together, because the confusion is real—and your intuition is right to question it.

The Ego, the Dream, and the Truth of God’s Child

MY ANSWER:

God’s child—you and me—used God’s power to create this world.

But we used it with a different purpose: to see what it would be like to be separate from Him.

That idea of separation gave rise to the ego.

And from the ego came this universe: the illusion of form, time, space, and death.

So yes—it is a dream.

But that doesn’t mean you are an illusion.

Here’s the shift in understanding:

• You are not the dream. You are the dreamer.
• You are the one having the dream—not a meaningless figure inside of it.

The dreamer is God’s child.

That’s who we are—both individually and collectively.

Each of us is an individual expression of God’s Love.

I am God’s child. You are God’s child.

Together, we are the Sonship.

You Are Not the Illusion—You Are the Dreamer

The ego is an illusion.

The body is temporary, and therefore, an illusion.

But what is eternal—the Child of God, the soul, the Spirit—is not an illusion.

You are not your ego. You are not your body.

You are your soul—your mind, which still shares thought and will with God.

That soul is real and eternal.

Why Does This Distinction Matters To Me?

Understanding what’s real and what’s not is foundational in A Course in Miracles.

Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.

So Stefan—yes, you are conscious.

And yes, you exist.

You are God’s creation. You are God’s Spirit. You are His Son.

Even while dreaming, your true identity remains untouched.

And that’s exactly what we are waking up to—the memory of our oneness with God.

Why Misunderstanding the Course Can Feel Depressing

If we misinterpret the Course and start believing we ourselves are illusions, then yes…depression, nihilism, loneliness, and fear will follow.

But if we’re willing to remember that we are still as God created us…then joy, connection, purpose, and peace follow instead.

As Jesus said in both the Course and the Bible:

“By their fruits, you shall know them.”

If the interpretation leads to sadness, it’s not from God.

If it leads to peace, that’s your cue that truth is present.

The Good News: You Are Spirit, Safe in God’s Love

You are not a meaningless dream.

You are not some random figure lost in a cruel illusion.

You are the holy and whole Child of God, forever safe in His mind, a radiant extension of His own Being—unchanged and unchangeable.

The Course says:

“Spirit am I, Holy Child of God, free of all limits, safe and healed and whole.
Free to forgive and free to save the world.”

That means: You matter.

You are not dissolving. You are awakening.

How the Holy Spirit Uses the Dream for Healing

The Course tells us:

This dream can be used for awakening.

The dream is not what matters. How we use it—that’s what matters.

If we choose the Holy Spirit as our guide, the world becomes a classroom for healing.

It becomes the place where illusions are laid down…and where we remember who we really are.

From “I Don’t Exist” to “I Am God’s Child”

So instead of saying:

“I don’t exist,”

We say:

“I exist eternally. I am spirit. I am soul. I am God’s child. I am waking up.”

That small part of you that feels discomfort when you hear “you are nothing”?

That’s the part of you that already remembers there’s more.

Let the Holy Spirit use that part.

Let Him guide you back to joy.

My Final Thoughts For You, Stefan.

You are not what the ego says you are.

You are not meaningless.

You are not an illusion.

You are not a mistake.

You are loved.
You are whole.
You are worthy.
You are safe in God.
