Today’s question comes from Kathy, a student of A Course in Miracles.
She asked me a powerful question about creation (what God does and doesn’t create.)

Here is what she asked:
QUESTION:
“What does God create?”
She was feeling confused.
Does God create the eternal? Does He create this world? Does He create us? Does He create suffering?
Understanding what creation really is… matters very much.
Because it tells us what God is responsible for—and what He’s not.
And even more than that… it helps us see what we are responsible for.
So this is a very empowering topic, and I’m excited to dive in.
What God Truly Creates: Only the Eternal
MY ANSWER:
Let’s begin.
At the highest level of truth, God created only the eternal.
A Course in Miracles tells us that God did not create the world of time, form, or separation—
Because He only creates what is eternal, changeless, and like Himself.
God’s only creation is Spirit—also called the Christ, or God’s Son, or Soul.
And the Course says: That’s you.
That’s me. That’s our true nature.
So yes—God did create us.
But he did not create our bodies.
He only created us as eternal Spirit.
Who Made the World If Not God?
So what about all this?
What about bodies and oceans and buildings and volcanoes?
The Course tells us:
These are not creations of God.
They were made, not created.
Why?
Because they change.
They fade. They die.
And anything that is not eternal… is not from God.
Here’s a quote:
“The world you see is an illusion of a world.
God did not create it. For what He creates must be eternal like Himself.”
If it’s not eternal—God didn’t create it.
That’s big.
Wait… Is That Actually a Good Thing?
Yes, and here’s why:
If you still think your identity is the body or this world is your home…his might feel jarring at first.
But A Course in Miracles gently shifts our foundation.
It says:
“Spirit is a thought of God, created like Himself.”
Which means: you are Spirit.
You are not the temporary body. You are the eternal soul.
And that… is really good news.
So Where Did the World Come From?
Isn’t God all-powerful? Isn’t God everywhere?
Yes—and here’s what the Course explains:
The ego will often demand answers to this.
But the truth isn’t something we can just explain.
It must be experienced.
And that experience comes through God—
Through our willingness to turn inward and ask the Holy Spirit to show us what is real.
The world, as we experience it, came from our own desire to know what it would be like to be separate from God.
And so… this world is a mistake.
A projection.
A dream born of the thought of separation.
Did We Actually Create This World with God’s Power?
Yes.
We used His power to make a world of illusion.
God didn’t create it—but He blessed us with creative power.
And we used that power to imagine a world without Him.
We made:
- Our bodies.
- Borders.
- Differences.
- Languages.
- Beliefs.
We set the stage for separation.
But we’re not stuck here. We’re here to undo it.
How Do We “Win” the Game of Separation?
We win by waking up.
By letting the Holy Spirit show us what’s real—beyond what our body sees.
When we choose:
- Love over fear
- Truth over illusion
- Spirit over ego
We begin to see a new world.
A world that reflects God, Christ, and Love.
That’s our purpose here.
What Makes This Message So Liberating?
This truth sets us free:
God did not create your suffering.
He did not create disease, death, or pain.
God is not the source of of suffering.
And we are not the victims of a cruel creator.
We were told:
“It is impossible to think of anything God created that could need forgiveness.”
That means:
God doesn’t need to forgive us—because He never condemned us.
He created us perfect… and still sees us that way.
What Does the Prodigal Son Have to Do With This?
Just like the story in the Bible:
The son leaves his father’s house to live on his own.
Life gets hard. He becomes lost.
And he decides to return.
Afraid of being judged—
But instead, he’s welcomed home.
His father throws a party.
That’s what God does.
He celebrates every soul that remembers Him.
Our Responsibility: Undoing Separation
If God didn’t make this broken world—
Maybe we had a role in shaping it.
Maybe we’re responsible for:
- Our judgments
- Our unforgiveness
- Our comparisons
- Our moments of attack or fear
And maybe…
We can start making a different choice.
A choice to train our mind to return to love. (Link)
Because every time we return…
We remember God.
And in remembering God… we remember freedom, happiness, and purpose.
The Holy Spirit: Correcting Every Mistake
Everything else—fear, hate, conflict, pain—is a mistake.
And every mistake has a correction.
That correction is the Holy Spirit.
And now, we’re being invited to welcome that correction in—
So we can return our hearts, our minds, and our souls to the memory of God.
We don’t have to fix the world.
We just have to remember what we are…
…and then follow God’s voice to share love, peace, and healing.
What’s True and What’s an Illusion?
Let’s end with clarity:
What is true is eternal, loving, and real.
What is illusion is temporary, fearful, and untrue.
God didn’t create illusion.
Illusion is the absence of God.
And now, in our everyday lives, we can begin to notice:
- “Am I thinking with fear… or with love?”
- “Am I in illusion… or remembering what’s real?”
And in every moment, we are invited to choose again.
