ACIM history, editions, and the Sparkly Edition
A Course in Miracles was scribed by Helen Schucman with the collaboration of William Thetford beginning in 1965 and was first published in 1976. Several editions now circulate, reflecting different source manuscripts and editorial choices. A useful comparison asks what material is included, what source was used, how edits are documented, and which format supports your study.
A short ACIM history timeline
- 1965: Helen Schucman began recording the inner dictation that became A Course in Miracles, with William Thetford’s collaboration.
- 1965–1972: the material was received, typed, reviewed, and organized through several manuscript stages.
- 1975: Judith Skutch Whitson became involved in the work of bringing the Course to publication.
- 1976: the first published edition appeared through the Foundation for Inner Peace.
- Later decades: additional editions based on the published text, earlier typescripts, and manuscript sources became available.

Why are there different editions?
The received material moved through note-taking, dictation, typing, editing, and publication. Editions differ because their editors use different points in that documentary history and make different decisions about capitalization, punctuation, section organization, restored material, and ancillary content. “Earlier” does not automatically mean “better,” and “authorized” does not answer every historical question; those are distinct criteria.

What is the Sparkly Edition?
“Sparkly Edition” is an informal name commonly used for an edition associated with the earlier Hugh Lynn Cayce manuscript text and recognizable cover styling. Miracles of Mind offers a Sparkly Edition and related study support. Readers should review the specific product description and edition notes rather than assuming every book called “Sparkly” has identical production details.
Which edition should a beginner choose?
Choose an edition you will actually read and practice. If you are joining a group, using the same edition can make page and section references easier. If your interest is historical or textual, compare editorial statements and source documentation. The Workbook’s practice can remain central even while students hold different preferences about editions.
